Diversity
Each student is unique with individual differences that should be respected and celebrated within the classroom. Throughout my various service learning, field experiences, pre-teaching, and counselor positions, I have been exposed to diversity in many different forms. When it comes to education, our classroom will reflect a wide range of diversities, backgrounds, and abilities. As teachers, it is up to us to encourage students to appreciate their differences, make their voices heard, and educate their classmates.
Service Learning
In Spring 2019, I had the opportunity to partake in a service-learning experience at Storybook Farms in Opelika. This experience opened my eyes to the challenges that many disabled children face. The mission of the farm is "to serve children ages 2 to young adulthood who face obstacles such as autism, cerebral palsy, cognitive delays, sensory integration issues, and bereavement situations to name a few.
Horseback riding is able to provide physical benefits such as improvements to balance, motor skills, muscle strength, and coordination." I was paired with a young toddler who was nonverbal, and she taught me new ways to communicate.
Throughout the semester, I wrote progressional reflections on my interactions with my paired child during our sessions. These 3 reflections showcase my understanding and knowledge gained from this beneficial learning experience that I will be able to apply as a teacher if I were to have disabled or special need children in my classroom.
In Fall 2019, I had the opportunity to partake in service-learning at Loachapoka Elementary School in Lee County. This experience opened my eyes to the challenges that many lower-income children face such as poverty and food insecurity.
Throughout the semester, I completed a couple of assignments about my placement at Loachapoka and the time spent in the 3rd-grade classroom. These assignments showcase my knowledge gained from this beneficial learning experience and how I will be able to meet the needs of children from lower-income homes in a future classroom.
The first assignment put me in the shoes of a student who battled food insecurity while the second assignment analyzed a specific student from my placement and how he compared above/below average to peers his age.
English Language Learners
Supporting ELLs
This video presentation showcases my commitment to learning strategies and resources for supporting ELL students in the classroom as well as my knowledge and competence in using technology and digital to effectively modify instruction for students.
In the video, I show how to use Google and Microsoft features to make learning more accessible for English Language Learners in the classroom. I show how to locate the features and incorporate them into your instruction.
