Professionalism

Professionalism is a large aspect in the field of education. Learning to collaborate with students and coworkers in a professional manner is essential to being a successful educator. I have participated in several professional development projects that have allowed me to further strengthen skills in teamwork, responsibility, delegating tasks, and meeting deadlines.

CTEE 3100

Professional Book Club Reading

During this course, we were grouped together to form a book club. We chose to read Christine Sleeter's Unstandardizing Curriculum. Sleeter offered enlightening insight on creating a multicultural classroom that reflects the student diversity within your classroom. Sleeter also includes several personal viewpoints of teachers and how they were able to integrate a multicultural curriculum without sacrificing the required standards.

To conclude our readings, we made an infographic that summarizes the highlights from Unstandardizing Curriculum with key quotes and fundamental concepts.

We also filmed a short commercial to convince viewers to read Christine Sleeter's book Unstandardizing Curriculum.

Current Issues in Education

An assignment that we built on throughout the semester involved exploring and taking actions on current issues in education.

The pressing issue that I chose to address was teacher autonomy over scripted curricula. I supported the argument that teachers can use their autonomy to reflect the culture of their classroom while still teaching content standards.

The action I took involved Pinterest, as I used social media to inform teachers of the various lesson ideas that would be engaging for students yet hit multiple subject areas!

CTEE 4020

Professional Development Book Project

Each member of this class selected a professional development book related to a Language Arts topic. I chose No More "I'm Done!" by Jennifer Jacobson. The book focused on fostering independent writers in the primary grades and included several engaging writing lessons and activities.

This project includes detailed notes from the book with specific quotes and analyzations, an annotated bibliography for potential readers, and an infographic highlighting the key points.

Once every member of the class completed the project, the professor compiled all of the annotated bibliographies into one document so that we would have professional development book resources for the future.

Bonnie Plants

Cabbage Lesson Plan

Award Winner 2021

Auburn University's College of Education (COE) partnered with the Bonnie Plants Program to host an elementary education student competition with the goal of creating lesson plans and activities that will engage students in a fun and educational experience of gardening. The top 4 student winners were awarded cash prizes of $750, $500, and $250 (3rd and 4th place). Judges were Alabama school teachers who are also outstanding graduates of the College of Education.

I am proud to say that I was selected as the 4th place winner for this Lesson Plan Contest. I designed a lesson that covered different aspects of the nine-week journey of students growing their own cabbage. My lesson specifically taught about the planting process.
